64th Annual Flag Day Parade will be held on June 14th in Appleton WI. The 

parade will be a tribute to the US Marines and will honor the many

faces of Freedom~ Celebrate America with bands, floats, and

other displays at the nations oldest Flag Day Parade!

Appleton Flag Day Parade Information~

Honoring Flag Day since 1950,
Appleton's parade is recognized as the nations oldest Flag Day Parade.
It has evolved into a huge event drawing upwards of 60,000 spectators from all over.
They come to honor the flag and to thank veterans for their service.
To see scouts marching, bands playing patriotic music, floats displaying flag themes and
to spend time with family and friends.

The Flag Day Parade has between 100 to 150 units,
which makes it one of the longest Flag Day Parades, lasting about 2 1/2 hours.
The Appleton Flag Day Parade has achieved the honor of being recognized as the oldest
 Flag Day Parade in the Nation.


The Appleton Flag Day Parade is a Family Tradition~

I remember going to the Flag Day Parade when I was growing up.
Every year I went to the parade with my mom, grandma, my younger sister and brother.
My older sisters were usually marching in the parade,
members of the Appleton West High School Marching Band.
My mom insisted that we all play a musical instrument, whether we were any good at it or not. Personally, I think she enjoyed cheering, clapping and
yelling out her kids name as they marched on by.

Early Saturday morning, around 8 am, on the day of the parade,
me, my brother and sister would grab our lawn chairs and
blankets and walk the 5 blocks to State Street where we would "set up" our spot.

We would then walk back home and wait for the time to come, to walk back to our "parade spot" with our cooler full of lemonade and beer, (the beer was for mom and grandma)
our bags of potato chips, popcorn and candy,
we would wait, impatiently, for the parade to begin.
We sat and waved our little hand held flags.
After what seemed like forever,
we could hear the sound of the drums in the distance,
see the line of flags waving,
as the parade came down the street.
We listened for the sirens from the firetrucks, making that loud boom,
that made babies cry and old people cover their ears.
You could literally feel the fun and excitement in the air..
After all, today was the Flag Day Parade!

If you were lucky enough to live on the parade route,
which hasn't changed much since the parade first started 64 years ago,
you held Flag Day parties and barbecue's.
Many families have their family reunions on Flag Day.
Over the years, I have been invited to many a Flag Day Party on State Street.
It's the only day of the year,
that you can (legally) consume alcoholic beverages on the streets of Appleton, WI.

My daughter has marched in the Flag Day Parade,
a member herself of the Appleton West High School Marching Band and
Captain of the Flag/Color Guard.
I followed in my mom's footsteps and
I too cheered, clapped and yelled out her name when she marched on by:)
Now, I take my grandchildren to the Flag Day parade..
...and the tradition continues....

To make these festive squares,
I used red (strawberry) jell-o and blue (berry blue) jell-o in this recipe.
These festive looking, great tasting jell-o treats will disappeared fast!

They are a little putzy to make but are well worth it!
You can change the flavors of jell-o, therefore changing the colors,
to suit any occasion or party your having.
I can't wait for football season, so I can make these festive treats in Green and Gold!

Red White and Blue Jello Squares {Broken Glass Jello}

Ingredients

• 5 1/2 cups boiling water, divided
• 2 (3 oz) packages strawberry flavored jello gelatin
• 2 (3 oz) packages berry blue flavored jello gelatin
• 2 envelopes (Knox) unflavored gelatin
• 1/2 cup cold water
• 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
• Broken Glass Jello
• 5 1/2 cups boiling water, divided
• 1 (3 oz) package strawberry flavored jello gelatin
• 1 (3 oz) package lime flavored jello gelatin
• 1 (3 oz) package orange flavored jello gelatin
• 1 (3 oz) package lemon flavored jello gelatin or any flavor combination of your choice
• 2 envelopes (Knox) unflavored gelatin
• 1/2 cup cold water
• 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk

Cooking Directions for Both~

1. Add 1 cup boiling water to each fruit flavor gelatin. Mix well, pour into separate small shallow food storage containers sprayed with cooking spray. Refrigerate 2 or more hours or until firm.
2. Sprinkle unflavored gelatin over cold water. Let stand 1 minute. Stir in remaining boiling water. Add sweetened condensed milk; mix well. Cool slightly.
3. Cut flavored gelatin into cubes. Randomly place cubes in a 13 x 9 inch dish sprayed with cooking spray. Pour milk mixture over gelatin cubes. Skim off bubbles if desired for smoother look. Refrigerate 2 hours or until firm.
4. Cut into squares.
