Summer just isn't summer without some sort of baked beans on the menu.
Made with great northern beans, smoked ham hocks,
crushed pineapple and the star of the show;
Sweet Baby Ray's {New} Hawaiian Style BBQ Sauce!

Hawaiian-style Baked Beans

Ingredients
  • 4 cups great northern beans
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 green pepper, chopped
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons smoked salt*
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups Sweet Baby Ray's New Hawaiian Style BBQ Sauce
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 1 (8 oz) can crushed pineapple, undrained
  • 2 1/2 cups reserved bean liquid
Cooking Directions
  1. Wash beans, discarding imperfect ones.
  2. Cover beans with 2 quarts cold water, refrigerate, covered overnight.
  3. Turn beans and water into a 6-quart kettle. Bring to boiling; reduce heat; simmer, covered for 1/2 hour. Drain, reserving liquid.
  4. Preheat oven to 300º
  5. Place ham hock in bottom of a 3 or 4 quart bean pot or casserole with lid.
  6. Add beans, chopped onions minced garlic and chopped green pepper.
  7. In a medium bowl, combine brown sugar, salt, dry mustard, white pepper, bbq sauce, molasses and crushed pineapple. Mix well. Stir in 1 cup bean liquid, pour mixture over beans.
  8. Add more bean liquid to cover beans, roughly 1 1/2 cups more.
  9. Bake, covered, 3 hours, stirring once every hour so beans cook evenly; add more water if needed. After beans have cooked 3 hours, remove from oven and stir. Check to see if the beans need more bean liquid; bake, uncovered, 1 hour longer.
